Lobbying in America: i think we turned a corner

•September 13, 2009 • 1 Comment

For some time America has been the pockets of anyone with money, and they use that money to influence those who are supposed to have our best interests at heart, our congressmen.

By looking at the tables at the bottom we can see that corporations and their hordes of goons known as lobbyists have been growing like weeds on Washington, until 2009 by the looks of it.

Really makes me think that maybe… just maybe, change is in the air. (I’ve always been a horrible optimist)

OR, more realistically, we are just having a calm period after the build up and climax of the 2008 election. Many companies were putting in their money to buy stock in our nations future.

And as you can expect its not Ma and Pa operations, but major players from a wide range of industries and a scary amount of power: Medical Insurance providers, Telecom Companies, Auto Makers, Gas Companies, and more.

If you want to know more about this or even start your own research to prove me wrong I’d suggest OpenSecrets.org

The questions of life all have answers

I sit here in my apartment doing something I feel I don’t feel I do often enough, reading a good book. The Last Lecture is a book that has been staring me in the face for sometime now and I spontaneously decided to take it down and find out what’s in between it’s covers.

This book is about a professor from Carnegie Mellon who was invited to give a lecture after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. This was a very fascinating story because he made the lecture a kind of conclusion to his life entitled, “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams,”

I got about 40 pages into it last night before passing out from sheer exhaustion but what one part that stood out for me was a quote from this professor’s parents that is just so simple and true yet it gives me drive, “if you have a question, then find the answer”

In today’s society of everything easy to obtain one thing remains the same, the process of learning and the drive of humanity to find answers to questions, to broaden our horizons, or, most importantly to better ourselves through knowledge.

it reminds me that education is not about pumping up your resume, but rather the ambition of the natural human soul that drives us to take in information and make something incredible out of it.

it is either that or my mind wanders too much when i read :D
